How this conversion works
Every length unit has an exact, fixed equivalent in meters (for example, 1 inch = 0.0254 meters, 1 mile = 1609.344 meters). Converting from one unit to another multiplies the value by the first unit's meter equivalent, then divides by the second unit's.
Examples
1 meter = 100 centimeters. 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. 1 foot = 12 inches. 3 feet = 1 yard.
