GPA Calculator

Calculate grade point average from course grades and credits.

GPA Calculator

Enter one course per line, as credits and a letter grade (e.g. "3 A-"), then select Calculate.

Valid grades:A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F, P, NP, I, W.

How this is calculated

Each letter grade has a fixed point value (A+ = 4.3 down to F = 0). GPA is the credit-weighted average: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ⁄ Σ(credits) Pass/No Pass, Incomplete, and Withdrawal grades (P, NP, I, W) don't count toward GPA — they're excluded from both the total and the credit count.

Examples

A 3-credit A, a 4-credit B+, and a 3-credit A- gives a GPA of 3.63 — (3×4 + 4×3.3 + 3×3.7) ÷ 10.

About this calculation

This uses the standard 4.0-point (plus/minus) grading scale used by most US colleges and universities. Some schools use a different scale or don't award plus/minus grades — check your institution's own scale if your GPA needs to match their records exactly.

Frequently asked questions

What format should I use for each course?

One course per line: the number of credits, then the letter grade, separated by a space or comma — for example "3 A-" or "3, A-".

Why doesn't a Pass/No Pass course change my GPA?

Pass/No Pass, Incomplete, and Withdrawal grades (P, NP, I, W) are excluded from GPA calculations everywhere — they still count toward your degree, but not toward your grade point average.
